Most driver retention tools wait for a driver to complain. But by the time a driver texts "low miles" or gives a 1-star survey, they're often already halfway out the door. What if you could catch the warning signs before they say anything?

The two scenarios
Scenario 1: Complaint validation
When a driver does complain ("low miles," "not getting enough loads"), DriverOpenDoor cross-checks the complaint against actual HOS data from Samsara. The feedback card shows one of three verdicts:
- "Miles confirmed" — the driver's miles are genuinely down versus their 8-week baseline. The complaint is real.
- "Perception gap" — miles are normal. The driver's perception doesn't match reality, which is itself a useful signal (maybe they don't understand the pay structure, or they're comparing themselves to a peer).
- "No telematics" — no HOS data available for that week.
This means fleet managers stop chasing phantom complaints — and start trusting the ones that validate.
Scenario 2: Silent driver decline
This is the bigger prize. Most disengaging drivers never complain — they just quietly start driving fewer miles, taking fewer loads, and sitting idle longer. By the time they quit, it's too late.
DriverOpenDoor now watches for compounding behavioral signals:
- Weekly miles trending down 15%+ versus the driver's own 8-week median
- Driving days shrinking (e.g., 5 days becoming 3)
- Idle time rising (driver sitting waiting for dispatch)
All three must hold simultaneously to trigger an alert. This is deliberate — a single-metric dip (like a slow freight week) doesn't trigger. We only alert when the pattern is truly personal and compounding.
The false-positive suppression layer
The hardest part of predictive retention isn't detection — it's not alerting on false positives. One wrong alert and managers tune out. So before any alert fires, DriverOpenDoor checks for legitimate explanations:
- Truck in shop — active fault codes + low engine time means the truck was being repaired
- PTO / time off — reduced driving days with some miles suggests vacation, not disengagement
- Fleet-wide dip — if 40%+ of the fleet shows declining miles that week, it's seasonal or freight-related, not personal churn
- New-hire training — drivers in their first 30 days naturally have lower miles
If any legitimate explanation applies, the alert is marked as explained and doesn't trigger a manager notification. The dashboard card still shows (transparency), but it's not noisy.
How to enable it
Silent decline detection is available on Premium and Enterprise plans for fleets using Samsara. The setup:
- Connect Samsara at Settings → Integrations (if not already connected)
- Add scopes to your Samsara API token: "Read ELD Compliance Settings (US)" and "Read Vehicle Statistics"
- Click "Sync Telematics" on the integrations card
- Enable alerts at Settings → Alerts → Silent Decline Alerts (opt-in, default off)
Dashboard cards appear automatically on the Alerts → Silent Decline tab. Email notifications are off by default — you turn them on when you're ready. The miles threshold is configurable (default: 15%).
Optional: real-time fault code webhook
For fleets that want real-time fault code alerts (not just the weekly sync), DriverOpenDoor generates a Samsara webhook URL and signing secret. Configure a "Fault Code" alert in Samsara's dashboard to send webhooks, and the system logs fault events in real time.
Privacy by design
Same as every DriverOpenDoor feature: silent decline alerts show anonymized labels ("Driver #1") — never driver names unless the driver chose to reveal their identity on the feedback form. Telematics data (miles, idle time, HOS) is never shown to drivers. The system only uses it to surface retention risk to fleet managers.
Why this matters
