DriverOpenDoor + Samsara: Auto-Sync Your Driver Roster for Retention (2026)
By DriverOpenDoor Insights
TL;DR
The Samsara integration is live. Paste one Samsara API token into DriverOpenDoor and your roster syncs automatically every week — active drivers, deactivations for turnover tracking, and each driver's manager. No CSV exports, no manual maintenance. Included on every plan, even Starter. Setup takes under a minute.
If your fleet runs on Samsara, your driver roster already lives in one place — and it changes every week. Drivers get hired. Drivers leave. Managers get reassigned. Keeping a separate retention tool in sync with all of that by hand is exactly the kind of busywork that quietly stops happening after month two.
So we fixed it. DriverOpenDoor now integrates natively with Samsara. Connect once with a single API token, and your active roster — plus each driver's manager — syncs automatically every week. No CSV exports. No manual maintenance. No stale lists.
It's included on every plan, even Starter, and setup takes under a minute.
Why this matters for retention
Driver retention only works if you're actually talking to the right drivers — all of them, every week. The moment your roster drifts out of date, the cracks show up fast:
- A driver you hired three weeks ago never got their first check-in, because they were never added.
- A driver who quit last month is still getting weekly texts — awkward, and it pollutes your data.
- A frustrated driver's concern routes to the wrong manager, because the assignment changed and nobody updated it.
Every one of those is a small failure of listening — and listening is the whole game. Fleets that catch problems early keep drivers longer, and the cost of replacing a single truck driver runs $8,000–$15,000. A roster that maintains itself means every driver gets heard, and every serious concern reaches the person who can act on it.
What syncs from Samsara
Once connected, DriverOpenDoor pulls straight from the Samsara Fleet API:
| From Samsara | Into DriverOpenDoor |
|---|---|
| Active drivers | Added to your roster + enrolled in weekly check-ins |
| Deactivated drivers | Marked as departed — kept for turnover tracking, never texted |
| Names, phone numbers, email | Kept current automatically |
| Driver managers (via tags or attributes) | Mapped so concerns route to the right leader |
We pull deactivated drivers too — not to message them, but so your turnover metrics stay honest. Only active drivers ever receive an SMS check-in.
Driver managers, handled automatically
Samsara doesn't have a single built-in "driver manager" field — different fleets model it differently — so DriverOpenDoor reads it the two ways fleets actually use:
- Tags — if you group drivers under a tag group like Dispatchers or Driver Managers, we use each driver's tag in that group.
- Custom attributes — if you store a "Driver Manager" attribute on the driver, we use that.
If a driver has neither, we leave the manager blank — we never guess. That means the manager data you see is data you can trust.
How easy is it, really?
This is the part fleets don't believe until they do it. There's no server to stand up, no IT ticket, no vendor call. If you can copy and paste, you can connect Samsara.
The high-level steps
- Create a Samsara API token. In Samsara, go to Settings → API Tokens → Create API Token. Enable the Read Drivers permission (and Read Tags if you assign managers via tags). Copy the token.
- Open DriverOpenDoor. Go to Settings → Integrations and click Connect on the Samsara card.
- Paste and pick your region. Drop in the token, choose US / EU / Canada, and click Connect Samsara.
That's it. DriverOpenDoor validates the token, pulls your full roster on the spot, and shows you exactly how many drivers imported. From then on it re-syncs every Sunday night — right before Monday's check-ins go out — so brand-new hires get their first survey without you lifting a finger. Need an update sooner? Your token is safe
Your Samsara API token is encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM. It's never shown again, never written to logs, and never included in any API response. Only fleet owners and admins can connect or disconnect an integration. Want to revoke access? Delete the token in Samsara and the sync stops — no loose ends.
Already on McLeod? Nothing changes
DriverOpenDoor's McLeod integration works exactly as before — Samsara simply joins it. Both are native, both are included on every plan, and both keep your roster current automatically. TMW Suite and Motive (KeepTruckin) are next on the roadmap. On a different TMS? Email support@driveropendoor.com — we prioritize by demand and most direct integrations ship in 2–3 weeks.
The bottom line
Retention isn't a one-time project — it's a weekly habit. And habits only stick when they're effortless. Wiring DriverOpenDoor to Samsara removes the last bit of manual upkeep between you and a fleet that actually feels heard.
