On your Alerts page, under a new "Silent Decline" tab, a card appears:

The alert shows "Driver #4172" because the driver's identity is protected. DriverOpenDoor uses anonymized labels for all alerts. The driver's name is only revealed if the driver themselves chose to share it through the feedback form. The telematics data itself (miles, idle time, HOS clocks) is never shown to drivers. Complaint validation: fact-checking what drivers tell you
Sometimes a driver does complain. They text "low miles" or "not getting enough loads" on their weekly check-in. DriverOpenDoor now cross-checks that complaint against the driver's actual HOS mileage data from Samsara, and shows you a verdict right on the feedback card:
- "Miles confirmed" (green badge) — the driver's miles are genuinely down versus their 8-week baseline. The complaint is real. Prioritize it.
- "Perception gap" (amber badge) — the driver's miles are normal. Their perception does not match reality. That is itself a useful signal. Maybe they do not understand the pay structure. Maybe they are comparing themselves to a peer who runs different lanes. Either way, the conversation is different than the one you would have if miles were actually down.
- "No telematics" (gray badge) — no HOS data available for that week. The system does not guess.

How the detection works (in plain English)
The three-signal check
DriverOpenDoor watches three behavioral signals from Samsara:
- Weekly miles — total driving distance from HOS daily logs, compared to the driver's own 8-week median.
- Driving days — the number of days the driver actually drove that week. Five days becoming three is a signal.
- Idle time — how long the driver sat with the engine running but not moving. Idle going up while miles go down means the driver is waiting for dispatch, sitting at a shipper, or not getting loaded.
All three must be trending the wrong way at the same time to trigger an alert. A slow freight week where everyone's miles drop does not trigger it for one driver. One bad day does not trigger it. The system only fires when the pattern is personal, compounding, and sustained across a full week.
This is deliberate. The hardest part of predictive retention is not detection. It is not alerting on false positives. One wrong alert and fleet managers tune out. So the bar to trigger is high.
The false-positive suppression layer
Before any alert fires, DriverOpenDoor checks for four legitimate explanations:
- Truck in shop. If the driver's assigned vehicle has active fault codes and low engine-on time that week, the miles drop is explained by maintenance, not disengagement.
- PTO or time off. If the driver drove two days but still logged some miles, they were probably on vacation. A truly disengaging driver is still on the road, just getting fewer loads.
- Fleet-wide dip. If 40% or more of the fleet's drivers show declining miles that week, it is seasonal or freight-related, not personal churn. The alert is suppressed.
- New-hire training. Drivers in their first 30 days naturally have lower miles. The system skips them.
If any legitimate explanation applies, the alert is marked as explained. It still shows on the dashboard for transparency, but it does not trigger an email or notification. No noise.
What telematics data is used
DriverOpenDoor pulls only what matters for churn detection from Samsara:
- HOS daily logs — drive distance, duty status, vehicle assignments
- HOS clocks — remaining drive/shift/cycle time, violations
- Vehicle stats — engine states, idle duration, fault codes

Step-by-step setup
If you have already connected Samsara for roster sync, you are halfway there. The same API token just needs two extra permissions.
Part 1: Update your Samsara API token
- Log in to your Samsara dashboard at samsara.com.
- Go to Settings (gear icon, top-right).
- Click API Tokens on the left menu.
- Find the token you created for DriverOpenDoor and click Edit.
- Add two permissions:
- Read ELD Compliance Settings (US) — for HOS daily logs and clocks
- Read Vehicle Statistics — for idle time and fault codes
- Click Save. No need to generate a new token. The existing one works.
Part 2: Enable telematics in DriverOpenDoor
- Log in to DriverOpenDoor and go to Settings, then Integrations.
- Find the Samsara card. You should see a "Telematics" status badge.
- If it says "Scopes Missing," the token does not have the two permissions yet. Go back to Part 1.
- If it says "Connected" in green, you are ready.
- Click Sync Telematics on the Samsara card. This kicks off the first telematics pull. It runs in the background and may take a few minutes depending on fleet size.
- After the sync completes, the badge updates to "Connected" and your first week of telematics data is in the system.
Part 3: Configure alert settings
- Go to Settings, then Alerts.
- Scroll to the Silent Decline Alerts section.
- Toggle "Email me silent-decline alerts" to on. (It is off by default so you are not flooded with emails before you are ready.)
- Optionally adjust the miles decline threshold. The default is 15%. This means a driver's weekly miles must be down 15% or more versus their 8-week baseline to be considered "declining." You can set it anywhere from 5% (more sensitive, more alerts) to 50% (very conservative, only steep drops trigger). Most fleets keep the default.
- Click Save.
That is it. From now on:
- Every Sunday night, DriverOpenDoor pulls the latest HOS and vehicle stats from Samsara.

- Copy the URL and secret.

- Configure a "Fault Code" alert condition to send to that webhook.
- Click Save.
